A strategic partnership between Willimantic Renaissance, Inc. (WRI) and Eastern Connecticut State University is creating more opportunities for students to contribute their time, talents, and ideas to life in Willimantic – through community service, arts and culture, internships, local events, and hands-on professional experience.

The partnership builds on Eastern’s longstanding commitment to its surrounding community. Through initiatives such as the Center for Community Engagement, Eastern regularly connects student volunteers with local organizations and projects, including Willimantic’s 3rd Thursday Street Fests. The university’s athletic teams, clubs, and academic departments also have a rich history of participation throughout town.

WRI and Eastern are building on that foundation through an ongoing, active collaboration that connects university interests and resources with community needs and opportunities. WRI Executive Director Chris Beaudry meets weekly with current students, alumni, and university employees to identify possibilities for involvement and turn those conversations into action.

The partnership is explicitly recognized in Eastern’s Strategic Compass, where item 3-6 identifies a “Formalized partnership with Willimantic Renaissance, Inc. (WRI).” Its inclusion places the collaboration within the university’s broader direction and commitment to its role in the region.

In his introduction to the Compass, Eastern President Karim Ismaili describes a framework shaped by students, faculty, staff, alumni, community partners, and other stakeholders. He emphasizes Eastern’s dual identity as Connecticut’s public liberal arts university and a regional public university, with a commitment to excellence, inclusion, and responsiveness to changing needs. The WRI partnership puts those priorities into practice by connecting students’ education and interests with meaningful experiences beyond campus.

That collaboration is already visible across WRI’s programming.

At the final 3rd Thursday Street Fest of the 2026 season, Eastern students turned out in strong numbers to volunteer. They helped set up and break down the festival, ran children’s booth activities, and staffed Eastern’s information tent, where they distributed university coloring books. Their participation supported the work required to produce a free community festival while giving students opportunities to meet residents, work alongside local organizers, and take an active role in downtown life.

The partnership has also supported more sustained professional learning. An Eastern music major recently completed a full-semester, 135-hour internship with The River Room Performing Arts Venue and other WRI projects. The internship connected undergraduate study with real-world business experience, providing a firsthand look at the work behind a community arts organization.

Eastern’s involvement extended to Windham, CT Celebrates America’s 250th, held on July 4, 2026. President Ismaili served as the celebration’s opening presenter, while a recent Eastern graduate in Communication, Film, and Theatre worked as a camera operator. These contributions reflected the range of ways university leaders and emerging professionals can help bring significant community events to life.

The relationship also maintains a regular presence on the radio airwaves. WRI–Eastern liaisons appear on State of the Arts with Chris Beaudry on Eastern’s radio station, WECS, helping connect campus and community conversations around local arts and involvement.

Beyond these individual projects, Eastern has hosted tables or participated at BlockToberFest, 3rd Thursday Street Fests, the Romantic Willimantic Chocolate Fest, and other community events. WRI, in turn, has participated in multiple Eastern career fairs and regularly attends Small Business Resource Center events, workshops, and activities. This exchange helps keep opportunities visible on both sides of the campus-community relationship.

More collaborations are taking shape. Plans are underway for The River Room Performing Arts Venue to showcase Eastern students live onstage in fall 2026, creating another opportunity for student talent to reach community audiences.

For WRI, the partnership supports its broader work of bringing people together through arts, cultural programming, festivals, and downtown activity. For Eastern students, it offers ways to help, work, create, perform, and participate in the community they call home during their college years.

Through regular meetings and practical collaboration, WRI and Eastern are making those connections a sustained part of community life – opening doors for students while strengthening the organizations, events, and shared experiences that bring Willimantic together.
